Tintypes

The month of June has found me returning once again to work in conjunction with Brevard Music Center in Brevard, NC. Last week the curtain went up on a production of the musical review Tintypes. I served as the set designer and it was an interesting process to say the least. I had been informed from the beginning that Tintypes was to be a touring show and the set would therefore need to be compact, versatile and assemble easily. However, nothing was known about the venues to which it would be traveling. All that was known, was that it would be performed on the main stage (WPA) at the music center. For those of you that don't know this space- it is a very large proscenium theatre. With a compact set and a "compact" budget, I began to design. Nevertheless things were not solidified until well after my arrival. I decided, because of the nature of the show, to try something a little different. My principal story-telling device became projections. This is the first time I have used them in a set but it worked out really well. It was so nice to be able to watch the show and then actually see tintypes of the people and places referenced. All in all for a week of hard work I feel like the show is a tremendous success.
